Chapter Fourteen
Hunter
Cole was here. How? How had he found me? Next to me, Skyler threw himself onto the dance floor without looking back. Traitor. I should have been angry or at least frustrated but all I felt was relief, because deep down I knew my actions had been careless and even dangerous. In a flurry of self-righteous anger at Cole, Iâd told myself that coming here to investigate myself was a good idea.
There were thunderclouds in Coleâs eyes as he pushed people aside. When he got to me, his hands grabbed my shoulder and he turned me around. âWhat the hell, Hunter?â
Not that I could hear the words over the pounding music, but there was no doubt what heâd said. For a few moments, we just stared at each other. Yeah, he was angry, and I should say something defusing but I got all distracted. Damn, Cole was hot. With his tight black t-shirt showing off his sculpted bodyâa scowl on his faceâhe looked powerful. Dangerous. The way he held me? Possessive. And, yeah, I very much wanted to be possessed by Cole Sawyer right now.
For a moment, we stood frozen, but then somebody ran into me from behind and shoved me into Cole, who expertly caught me with one arm. Damn, he even smelled delicious. A spicy aftershave mingled with soap. Coleâs other hand shot out, and he gave the kid who had run into me a rough shake. Surprised at the reaction, the guy quickly mouthed an apology.
Cole looked ready for a fight. His knuckles turned white as his grip tightened, and his eyes narrowed. Carefully, I put my hand on his chest to get his attention and leaned it to let my lips touch his neck. âDance?â
Cole blinked. He locked eyes with me, and then, as if he only now realized what he was doing, he dropped his hold on the guyâs shirt. We both watched the kid scurry awayâor at least, I did, because when I turned to Cole, he was watching me. His brows pulled together in a frown and took a half step back.
Mine. Not giving him the chance to get away, I started dancing right in front of him. I wasnât Skyler, but years of clubbing with him had taught me a few moves on my own and, hell, if I wasnât trying them all out on Cole right now. I lifted my arms, swirled around him, and started to rub my ass against his thigh, not yet brave enough to press against his crotch. Câmon Cole, please. Another brush against him without a reaction and I could feel my courage dwindling. Heâs not into you. Heâs a nice guy who will help you. Itâs his job, but he isnât interested and youâre just making a complete fool out of yourself.
Fighting the disappointment, which was already choking me, I gave up, but before I could move away, I felt Coleâs strong grip on my hips. His arms wrapped around me from behind and in a second, he had me pressed against the solid plane of his body.
